Comp25:
Lab - Network File Management
Learning Objectives
- To become familiar with the your U:\ network drive as well as
the Windows file management utility, Windows Explorer
- To learn how to create screen shots from your computer for final
output of your work
- To learn how to access WebFolders to edit your network files
remotely
Background
Your U: Drive has special folders within
it called
MyDocuments and "web-docs".
You can store any documents you wish in
U:\MyDocuments. In fact, you probably already have been.
Remember that you cannot save files to the local "My Documents"
folder on lab PCs or they will be wiped out when you log off.
Instead, U:\MyDocuments folder exists for you to keep your
files safe.
Note that you are allocated a total of 250MB
for your U:\ drive, so be wary of saving too many graphic or
multimedia files to U:
Steps to Take
- Be sure you are logged into a computer at
Pacific, using the STK domain and your own credentials.
This part of the
assignment will not work from home. If you will
not be in lab, you can use the library.
- OPEN: My Computer
- Verify that the "View" options are
set to show the proper "path" and file extensions as discussed
during lecture
CLICK Tools | Folder Options | View (XP)
CLICK Organize | Folder & Search Options | View (Vista)
- OPEN: the root folder of your network drive location U:\
- Locate the documents folder. It may be named "MyDocuments" or
simply "Documents". If no folder exists, create one named
Documents.
- CREATE: a new folder called LabWorkLastName (use your
own last name!!)
beneath U:\MyDocuments.
- CREATE: a new folder called GraphicsLastName beneath
U:\MyDocuments.
- Your folder structure should look similar to the
following example, depending on your operating system. . Be sure that the path statement
reflects your U:\ folder in the address bar & title bar.
- Start WORD or another word processing program. Write a short
paragraph on how to take screen shots. Refer to "Screen
Capture" instructions under Resources if you need help.
- Save the file as
instructions.doc
to your U:\MyDocuments\LabWorkLastName folder.
Note: Be sure you navigate to your U:\
MyDocuments \ LabWorkLastName
folder before you click "Save"
- Save your changes, but keep Word open while you continue
multi-tasking.
- START: Internet Explorer and browse around until you find
four images or pictures that you like. They can be of your own
choosing. Go to Google Images for a quick image search.
- Save the four images to U:\MyDocuments\GraphicsLastName
as follows:
-RIGHT MOUSE CLICK: on the image and CHOOSE: Save Picture As...
-Create your own filenames for these images, such as image1.jpg
or image2.gif, for example.
- CLOSE: Internet Explorer
- Go back to Windows Explorer and take screen shots of both the
expanded LabLastName
folder and the GraphicsLastName folder so that
their contents are visible on the right side of the window.
Size the windows according to the sample, so that only the current
folders/files in use are visible.
Paste the images into your document
instructions.doc. Save your changes, but keep Word open while
you continue multi-tasking. Your screen shots should look similar to the following examples, depending on your operating system.
- CLOSE: Windows Explorer and start your browser, either Internet
Explorer or Firefox.
- Go to: http://webfolders.pacific.edu and login with your STK
credentials
- Open HomeDirectory\MyDocuments and explore the contents of the
folders you created. You will notice these are the SAME folders
and files; just simply accessed through the web browser. Take a
screen shot of your GraphicsLastName folder from the webfolders
venue and paste it with your other screen shots into
instructions.doc

- Save your changes to
instructions.doc and upload the file to Blackboard
under Week 3 Lab: Network File Management.
