Comp25: Lab - Network File Management

Learning Objectives

  1. To become familiar with the your U:\ network drive as well as the Windows file management utility, Windows Explorer
  2. To learn how to create screen shots from your computer for final output of your work
  3. To learn how to access WebFolders to edit your network files remotely

Background

Your U: Drive has special folders within it called MyDocuments and "web-docs".

You can store any documents you wish in U:\MyDocuments.  In fact, you probably already have been.  Remember that you cannot save files to the local "My Documents" folder on lab PCs or they will be wiped out when you log off.  Instead, U:\MyDocuments folder exists for you to keep your files safe.

Note that you are allocated a total of 250MB for your U:\ drive, so be wary of saving too many graphic or multimedia files to U:

Steps to Take

  1. Be sure you are logged into a computer at Pacific, using the STK domain and your own credentials.  This part of the assignment will not work from home.  If you will not be in lab, you can use the library.
  2. OPEN: My Computer
  3. Verify that the "View" options are set to show the proper "path" and file extensions as discussed during lecture
CLICK Tools | Folder Options | View  (XP)
CLICK Organize | Folder & Search Options | View (Vista)
  4. OPEN: the root folder of your network drive location  U:\

     beneath U:\MyDocuments.
  7. CREATE: a new folder called GraphicsLastName beneath U:\MyDocuments.

  13. START: Internet Explorer and browse around until you find four images or pictures that you like. They can be of your own choosing.  Go to Google Images for a quick image search.
  14. Save the four images to U:\MyDocuments\GraphicsLastName as follows:
-RIGHT MOUSE CLICK: on the image and CHOOSE: Save Picture As...
-Create your own filenames for these images, such as image1.jpg or image2.gif, for example.
  15. CLOSE: Internet Explorer
  16. Go back to Windows Explorer and take screen shots of both the expanded LabLastName folder and the GraphicsLastName folder so that their contents are visible on the right side of the window.

Size the windows according to the sample, so that only the current folders/files in use are visible.

Paste the images into your document instructions.doc. Save your changes, but keep Word open while you continue multi-tasking.  Your screen shots should look similar to the following examples, depending on your operating system.
