Learning Objectives
- To provide an understanding of file management and
organization through modern GUI interfaces
- To work with an FTP Client and practice working remotely
- To explore file management,
networks, and the sharing
and multitasking features of
Microsoft Windows
Special Notes: Read!
WINDOWS USERS: To complete this assignment you will need to download the
WinSCP4 FTP client. Download
this file locally to your desktop or to your USB location so it will be easily
accessible to you in the future.
MAC USERS: WinSCP4 is a PC-only client. If you want to
download a Mac compatible FTP You can download Fetch.
It is free for academic use. Please
email me if you are going to use
this and I will send you the serial number.
You should also have a portable disk
medium, preferably a USB stick. If you don't have a USB stick, you
can save the files and follow the instructions relative to your hard
disk (C:)
The instructions will generically refer to a relative
path, which is relative to your current drive...either the hard disk
or USB. Mac users: You can adapt this exercise for OSx
Do not download the files until you are instructed to do
so in Step #4 of the assignment.
Steps to Take
- Place your portable disk medium in the appropriate drive. If you
are not using a portable disk, navigate to the root of your hard
disk. Make note of the drive designation.
- Insure that the complete path and file extensions are
visible, as instructed in class.
- CREATE: Two folders beneath your root folder:
- ..\Homework and
- ..\Lastname (Your last name!)
Remember! ..\ is relative to the current drive in use - It could
be C:\ D:\ or F:\ depending on the drive that
you are using.
-
SAVE-DOWNLOAD: the 12 files listed to your ..\LastName
folder.
- Create two folders beneath \Homework:
\Homework\Comp25
\Homework\Graphics
- Create one folder beneath \LastName
\LastName\Multimedia
- MOVE: The following
files from the \Last Name into the \Homework\Comp25 folder.
proposal.doc
report.wps
interior.bmp
- OPEN: \Homework\Comp25
RENAME: proposal.doc to
agenda.doc

EXPAND:
the \Homework\Comp25 folder so that the contents are visible in

folder and its contents are visible. All homework should
be on ONE page.
Take a screen shot of this window only. Multitask to a
word processing document and paste the screen shot.
Your screen shot will appear similar to the sample below
(Windows & Mac views). Be sure that your "path" is visible
(Windows) and that your file extensions are visible.
- MULTITASK & EXPAND:
the folder \Homework\Graphics so that the contents are visible in
the right frame.

add this screen shot to the same document, beneath the first
graphic image.
-
MULTITASK & EXPAND:
the folder \LastName\Multimedia so that the contents are visible

Details and sort by size, so that the largest file is first in
the list. Take a screen shot of the window and paste into your
Word document, beneath the second graphic.
- Open WinSCP 4 FTP client and login to your STK location remotely
- The Host name is: tiger.cc.uop.edu

- Accept the defaults when WinSCP caches your security
information the first time you log in.
- You are now looking at your U:\ network location remotely via
FTP, with your local folders in the left pane and your network
folders in the right pane
- COPY your local ..\Multimedia folder in the \LastName
