Comp25: Week 4 Homework: More File Management & FTP

Learning Objectives

  1. To provide an understanding of file management and organization through modern GUI interfaces
  2. To work with an FTP Client and practice working remotely
  3. To explore file management, networks, and the sharing and multitasking features of Microsoft Windows

Special Notes

To complete this assignment you will need to download the WinSCP4 FTP client. Download this file locally to your desktop or to your USB location so it will be easily accessible to you in the future.

MAC USERS:  WinSCP4 is a PC-only client.  If you want to download a Mac compatible FTP client, go to http://www.fetchsoftworks.com to download Fetch.  It is free for 15 days and costs $25 after that.  As an alternative, use the Lab or Library computers to complete the assignment

You should also have a portable disk medium, preferably a USB stick. If you don't have a USB stick, you can save the files and follow the instructions relative to your hard disk (C:)

The instructions will generically refer to a relative path, which is relative to your current drive...either the hard disk or USB.

Do not download the files until you are instructed to do so in Step #4 of the assignment.

Steps to Take

  1. Place your portable disk medium in the appropriate drive. If you are not using a portable disk, navigate to the root of your hard disk. Make note of the drive designation.
  2. OPEN: My Computer | Click Folders
Set your View options so that the full path is visible in the Title bar and that the complete path and file extensions are visible, as instructed in class.
CLICK View | Folder Options | View  (XP)
CLICK Organize | Folder & Search Options | View (Vista)
  3. CREATE: Two folders beneath your root folder: 1) Homework and  2) YOUR last name. EXAMPLE: (depending on your drive designation)
G:\Homework and  G:\Schuler (G: is an example only!)    ..\Schuler  would be "relative" to the drive that is in use.

  4. SAVE-DOWNLOAD: the 12 files listed to your ..\LastName folder.
