Create Links for Excel Financial Documents

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand conditional formatting
  2. To convert spreadsheet documents to HTML format
  3. To link files to HTML
  4. To revisit HTML tables.

Steps to Take - (Note -- This assignment will be easier if you are logged in directly to STK either in lab or the library)

  1. Open your Five Year Analysis.xls file and edit the Summary page to include formulas for:
    1. Cost of Sales for Jan - Dec
    2. Profit Margin for Jan - Dec
    3. Create a conditional rule that adds font color and fill color to the cells Jan - Dec that have 30% or greater profit margin.
    4. Note: If you have no months with 30% or greater profit margin, edit the individual year worksheets to lower expenses or increase income to increase your bottom line, or profit margin. DO NOT EDIT THE SUMMARY WORKSHEET!  This contains the linked formulas. 

      Sample:

    5. Save the changes to your file.
  2. Convert the following files to HTML according to the instructions given in class and save them to your web-docs location.  These are files that you created in previous assignments.
    1. payroll-benefits.xls   (save as benefits.html)
    2. Five-Year Study.xls  (save as study.html)
  3. Be sure these files are saved to your web-docs location along with any "helper" folders that Excel automatically generated.  The folder and file MUST reside in the same location!



  4. Edit your Investor Relations webpage.

    1. Write an introductory paragraph to welcome your investors to your page.  Gloat about how awesome your business is and how successful you are.  You want to to attract potential investors.

    2. Remember! 

      1. A paragraph consists of three elements!!
      2. Topic sentence:   The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. It introduces the main idea of the paragraph. It should briefly summarize the main idea of the paragraph too so that you can indicate to the reader what is your paragraph about.
      3. Supporting sentences:   They come after the topic sentence, making up the body of a paragraph. They give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. In these sentences you should focus on giving supporting facts, details, and examples.
      4. Closing Sentence :  The closing sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. It restates the main idea of your paragraph.
    3. Underneath that, create an <H2> tag for Financial Reports

    4. Create a new table with two columns

    5. In the first column, introduce and describe the document in two or three sentences. In the next column create a hyperlink to your file. Your table should pick up the styles from your style sheet and look similar to the following:

  5. Be sure to test your links from a computer other than your own to be sure your Excel files work. Correct any Forbidden messages that might arise
  6. Save your file again, and upload your Investor Relations HTML page to Blackboard for grading
