The
Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP)
The School
of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of
the Pacific is firmly and aggressively committed to the
support and promotion of under-represented student
populations in the field of engineering. MEP assists
university students enrolled in colleges of engineering
and computer science to attain
their bachelor's degree.
The
MEP has ejoyed
outstanding results, particularly in the large number of
engineers and computer scientists that graduate from the
program. Many MEP industry
partners maintain active involvement with the university
because of the program's success in meeting company needs for a diverse pool of highly skilled
technology professionals.
The main
components of the MEP
include:
-
Industry
Advisory Board, a valuable connection between
students and the industry leaders who may later hire
them. The board provides scholarships, strategic
planning, Co-ops, field trips and other
resources.
-
Career
advising for students to learn specifics about
engineering fields. Field trips, job fair
information, job shadowing exercises, and industry
mentors are available to students.
-
Professional
development workshops that include mock job fairs,
résumé preparation, interview skills, how to find
part-time, full-time and summer employment.
-
On
campus engineering guest speakers to share
information and mentor students, and other on campus
activities for students to build and foster a
network of student contacts.
-
Personal
advising to address non-academic issues that may
interfere with students' academic performance.
-
A
Student Study Center, a dedicated multipurpose space
for study, workshops and information sharing.
-
Academic
Excellence Workshops (AEW) where students are
scheduled in math and science core classes and
taught how to maintain high academic outcomes
through group study.
-
Links
with student and professional organizations such as
the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), which
provide mentors, guest speakers and offer industry
tours.
