DESCRIPTION OR INDEX TO ATTACHED DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description:
Expanding Your Horizons is a conference to expose sixth through twelfth grade young women to exciting aspects of science, math and engineering. The conference brought about 500 young women to the UOP campus for a day of workshops and a disaster simulation. Tau Bates assisted with workshop setup, traffic control, facilities, and clean-up.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBPi:
This conference provided general education and encouragement to young women in the community to pursue careers in fields of science and engineering.

III. Organization & Administration: in conjunction with another group? Yes
The event is coordinated annually by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Education Outreach. The main campus sponsor of the event was the Society of Women Engineers.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements:
No cost was incurred to Tau Beta Pi. All members and candidates were asked to volunteer their time.

V. Special Problems:
There were no special problems, other than the fact that a wedding reception of 300 attendees took place on a lawn in the middle of the conference.

VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be specific):
The conference went very well, although it was subject to the general logistics problems that any conference of that size would experience. Tau Bates ended up acting as the message service when the cellular phone network went down just as the mock disaster was beginning.
