DESCRIPTION OR INDEX TO ATTACHED DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description:
Any campus organization can request a booth at the Homecoming Carnival. Students and staff, alumni and community members all gather to celebrate and show spirit before the Homecoming football game. The theme of our booth was a "Pi" Eating Contest, in which 5 contestants competed to see who could remove the most jelly beans from whipped cream and pudding pies with their mouths in a given time limit.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBPi:
The carnival provided a good opportunity to publicize our local Tau Beta Pi chapter and meet with alumni. Our booth was decorated with several of the Tau Beta Pi posters, the small Bent castings, and some candidate memorabilia from years past.

III. Organization & Administration: in conjunction with another group? No
The organization included planning the contest and choosing contest rules, prizes, and materials. The president and vice-president went around to local merchants requesting donation of gift certificates as prizes. Members made the pudding the night before. The whipped cream and pudding were kept in a cooler during the event and the pies were put together before each round.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements:
Four gift certificates were donated by Marie Callender's as prizes and we purchased 20 $1 gift certificates from Baskin Robbins. We planned on 12 rounds of 5 people each, and bought 12 boxes of pudding, 3 pounds of jelly beans, and 4 tubs of whipped topping. Each of the candidates was asked to show up for 2-hour shifts, and the president and vice president (acting as the event chair) were there for the duration of the 7 hours from set-up to clean-up. The chief advisor also assisted for most of the event.

V. Special Problems:
The event was originally intended to be a fundraiser. Each contestant was to be charged $1 to participate. It became quickly apparent that most of those interested in the event were small children who did not have money. At that point, we decided to run the contests for free and give away the Baskin Robbins gift certificates, and raffle the Marie Callender's pie certificates off at a later date to cover the expenses incurred in producing the pies and buying the small prizes. We also discovered that if we allowed the children to take the pie remains with them, they ended up throwing them at their friends.

VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be specific):
The children that participated had a great time and adults enjoyed watching the kids and cheering them on. For the final round, the chapter president, vice-president, and chief advisor competed against two local radio disc jockeys. As a public service, the Tau Bates "let" one of the disc jockeys win.
