Communication Skills and Teamwork

For my Introduction to Engineering class, I did several group projects that challenged me to use my communication skills.  We were put into groups and were told to construct a cardboard boat that could be quickly propelled and could stay afloat for a long period of time.  I was required to work with my team in constructing the boat model, helping assemble the boat, and piloting the boat itself.  I had to use my communication skills to help coordinate group meetings and schedule tasks for certain group members.  I was also the main writer of the formal report for the project.  In another group project, I was put into a group and was told to build a parabolic hackey-sack launch mechanism.  Once again I was responsible for coming up with preliminary ideas with my team, helping build the mechanism, and helping coordinate group efforts.  My two partners and I had to give a formal presentation of the project after the competition was held.  By doing these group projects I have learned how to work with other people and how to work as a team to accomplish a goal.

Professional and Personal Growth

In my first semester at UOP, I discovered that college in general, and engineering specifically, is very challenging.  I am enjoying my college experience at UOP, but I know in order to be successful here, I will need to be diligent in my studies.  I have made new friends and worked with people who I had never previously met.  Working in these projects has allowed me to improve upon my team work and problem solving skills.  Having attended classes from several different fields of engineering, I am still undecided as to exactly what type of career I plan to pursue with my engineering degree.
