Recipient of the 2008 American Chemical Society Analytical Chemistry Division’s Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Analytical Chemistry.

At Pacific, Professor Sparkman teaches a graduate course in mass spectrometry and has taught undergraduate analytical chemistry.  He is the manager of the Pacific Mass Spectrometry Facility.  He is also the author of Mass Spectrometry Desk Reference, 2nd ed. (2006, Global View Publishing, Pittsburgh, PA, ISBN: 978-0-9660813-2-9); the coauthor of Introduction to Mass Spectrometry: Instrumentation, Applications, and Strategies for Data Interpretation, 4th ed. (2007, John Wiley & Sons, Chichester, U.K., ISBN: 978-0-470-51634-8) with J. Throck Watson, Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry and Department of Biochemistry, Michigan State University; and co-designer with Watson of the Mass Spectrometry Quick Reference Guide, which has been translated from English into French, German, and Spanish and published by multiple mass spectrometry manufacturers.  Every year since 1995, Professor Sparkman has published “What’s New in Mass Spectrometry at PittCon”, a review of new products and technology presented at the annual Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy in the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.  In addition, he taught 2-day and 3-day courses in the interpretation of mass spectra, GC/MS, and LC/MS for the American Chemical Society from 1978 to 2006.  He now teaches these same courses for LC Resources.  Professor Sparkman is the director of Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry: Principles and Practice, which is a 5-day intensive hands‑on course taught every summer at Pacific using the latest instrumentation provided by the various manufacturers.  Professor Sparkman is currently, and has been for the past 15 years, a consultant to the Mass Spectrometry Data Center at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (U.S. Department of Commerce).

The Mass Spectrometry Facility at Pacific currently has a JEOL GCmate double‑focusing mass spectrometer with EI, CI, and LINK scan capability, and a Resolving Power of 5000 (10% valley) at maximum sensitivity; a JEOL LCmate with APCI and electrospray interfaces, LINK scan capability, and a Resolving Power of 5000 (FWHM); a Shimadzu/Kratos AXIMA CFR Plus MALDI/Curved Field Reflectron TOF, R=20,000; a Varian Saturn IV quadrupole ion trap GC‑MS with EI, CI, SIS, and MS/MS options; a Varian 1200L triple quadrupole with ESI and APCI; a Varian 4000 GC‑MS; a Varian 2000 GC‑MS; an Agilent 6890/5975 GC‑MS; A Varian 320 triple quadrupole with ESI; a Shimadzu QP 2010 LC‑MS with ESI; and a JEOL AccuTOF with ESI, APCI, and DART.

Professor Sparkman’s research interests include the use of electron ionization mass spectral databases in the interpretation of spectra generated from other ionization techniques and MS/MS and fragmentation mechanisms.  He is also very interested in the development of forensic applications of DART ionization and the mechanisms of DART ionization.
